Title tag is a major factor in the search relevancy algorithm on some search engines. Try to stay within a limit of 60 characters. Use unique titles, with your most important search keywords in your title for each page. Content at the beginning of the tag is considered more prominent
Consider what is most important to the reader who comes across your page in a search at say, Google or Bing even if enhancing your brand image online is a consideration. Placing your company name or brand identity at the end of the tag will prove to be more than adequate.
e.g. <title>Our brand new widget – OzWidgets</title>
If your market is strictly local, say, a company operating exclusively in Melbourne, then consider adding your geo-location to your title tag and also your meta tags.
Meta Tag content, is not as important as most people believe. Search engines decreased the relevancy of the meta tag content in their algorithm to improve the accuracy of their search results. That said, the Description Meta Tag should still be considered part of your SEO process.
The meta description tag is often displayed in the search results so you should make it appealing to potential visitors and the search engines. Use keywords, but make it readable and appealing to potential visitors. Your geographic region can be the most defining word to create a phrase so remember to include it.
Form unique phrases, don’t just list your keywords in any order. Make all pages different and try to select one keyword phrase that describes your web site theme and include on every single page.
Any keywords listed in your site title should be included in your Description Meta Tag. More importantly, your keywords should be throughout your page content.
When creating your Description, follow the same rules that are covered for creating Titles. Most search engines display the contents of the description meta tag in the search results under your Title, so make it appealing to potential visitors and spider robots by including your relevant keywords into readable text.
Most search engines read more than 170 characters of the Description Meta Tag, however the amount of text they display is frequently limited to 150-170 characters.
Avoid excess repetition and use keyword phrase combinations where possible (don’t dilute the relevancy by adding more words than necessary).
Meta tags by themselves are no longer the most effective way to improve your ranking in search engines. Other factors are also essential in achieving a high ranking in the search engines.
Follow and NoFollow Tags tell search engine robots whether or not to follow any outgoing links on the page
<meta name=”robots” content=”index, follow”>
<meta name=”robots” content=”index, nofollow”>
Or they tell them not to follow a specific link <a href=”join.aspx” rel=”nofollow”>Join</a>
The process of selecting keywords should begin with an evaluation of what your site and the specific page is about. If you ask most people what your site is about, they will probably give you a one or two word answer.
You are more likely to be found in the top 20 if you position keywords next to each other to form phrases. This is known as keyword proximity. Sites with the word(s) in the exact order as searched for tend to pull before sites that just contain the words.
What Are Filter Words?
Some search engines filter out extremely common words in order to save space or to speed up searches. These are also known as “stop words” because it won’t stop to look for them. Examples include words like “a, the, and, or.” These are ignored to save disc space on the search engine server.
If you own a brand new web site which has little to no credibility with any of the major search engines or directories, consider less competitive keywords/keyword phrases for your initial SEO campaign.
Location of Keyword Phrases
Search engines determine the relevancy of your page/site based on several factors, one of the most important factors are the use of keywords/keyword phrases, relevant to the page content. Things to consider are the keyword density, where the keywords appear, how they are used, and where they are positioned.
Sites can be penalised for excessive keyword repetition. Aim for a fair and reasonable keyword arrangement. Let’s consider some places where keywords could possibly be placed:
Description meta tag
Bold Text & Links
Graphic ALT tags
Do the spiders read a keyword every time you put one in one of these places? No one really knows other than the search engines. When you discover what keywords to use, use them sparingly and in a natural way and you’ll have nothing to be concerned about.
