Building Quality SEO Backlinks

Search engines these days are pretty good at recognising dishonest SEO backlinks.  They are quick to penalise sites that try to use spam linking techniques to gain popularity, including links on unrelated web pages, crammed full with external links.

If you practice Backlink Building, stay within your theme, keeping your inbound links focused on your site’s topic. Also, Search engines don’t just go by the quantity of links, they comprehensively evaluate the relative importance of the page content of where the inbound points to and also where the outbound link points from.

Therefore it is very important to consider the quality and relevance of every external domain before linking to them.

Practicing link exchanges with off-theme websites is also referred to as Link Stuffing. Mainly because they fail to have any relevance with each other and the visitors coming to these pages are diverted to sites which are unrelated to your products or services.

Therefore, it is always better to source SEO backlinks with relevant and related sites, which can help your visitors to explore more information about your business offerings.

All Spam linking strategies will get your website banned by the major search engines.  SEO backlinks should only be considered if they are related to your theme or subject, providing your visitors with valuable information on those topics.

If your sites theme is say, popular brands of sports gear and related accessories and you include links to the suppliers sites or links to online stores that sell your brands, then it may not be considered as a link farm, rather, a relevant Backlink method.

The plan is to make the search engine believe, that the website or page is extremely popular because of all the pages that are linking to it to ‘trick’ the search engines into giving it a high ranking.

The major search engines have been well aware of these techniques for some time and penalise anyone who uses these Spam methods. So it is essential that you ask any SEO company you approach about how and where they source backlinks.

Google created their quality score called PageRank, which was a score out of 10 for every page in a website.  This provided every website owner with a quality check on their pages or any page on an external domain.

Most SEO companies use software to discover the quality of a domain, or a specific page.  If you use Firefox they offer an Add-on toolbar from SEOquake which includes the quality of any page you visit, including your own.

SEOquake is a free plugin for browsers that provides you with key SEO metrics for a specific page, along with other useful tools such as SEO Audit and many others.

SEO Tools like SEOQuake give some webmasters and some SEO companies a huge edge to building their clients quality score, which improves their websites ranking for their relevant searches.  This provides a huge advantage over their competitors who are abusing the system and sourcing low quality backlinks.

This is not how natural links occur so to level the ‘playing-field’ Google created PR-Spread which could detect if you’re abusing their system by focusing only on links that are PR 1+  And very few that are on new pages which are usually PR n/a until Google scores the page PR0 or higher.

Up until Google concealed your PR, there was lots of debate about what % of PR 0 links you need to meet Google’s PR-Spread and not being seen as indulging in PageRank sculpting both of which can result in your domain being penalised.

In the real world for most websites, most of their SEO backlinks should appear on new pages that hold little to no authority or waiting to score some. Why? Because it is how ‘natural’ backlinks normally appear and what search engines consider ‘natural’ backlinks.
