Can Social Media help your Small Business?
Social media is great if you already have a huge network of customers, who are waiting for your next new product or an update to an existing one or a ‘special offer’.
So if you’re Telstra, Apple or any other large company with a huge network of customers, it usually pays off to have a presence on social media. Its not unlike email marketing, that is you need a large network because only some of them will ‘bite’ when you offer a special.
A market where it works well for Small Business is for cafes. They can use Facebook/Twitter to send out daily specials which will tempt customers who usually go to their competitors cafe on say a Wednesday, to come in to their cafe and win the special price.
If your product or service is something that your customers are only likely to buy, once or twice in their lifetimes, social media is of little value at all.
For example, lots of tradesmen, such as builders, renovators or roof restoration companies rely more on referrals, because they’ll never work for the same client again unless they sell their existing home at some point in the future.
How do your Small Business customers find your website?
Most folk start in Google which takes them out to a website offering the product or service they are keen to purchase. If it’s a product that’s retailed widely, say a 3D TV, it comes down to who’s got the best price when the buyer starts their search for a specific brand or model.
Remember, most of your web customers will arrive via a Google search for your products or services. Social media involves adding a link to your web pages which takes your customer out of your site to a social media page.
What does the social media page contain? Snippets from web pages on your website with links that can send the customer back into your website to a specific page.
That’s assuming the customer doesn’t get distracted and decides to check out his or her friends social media pages while they are there and then returns to Google to resume their search.
Will they click back out to your site or go to a competitors to check out their price? That’s one of the risks of sending folk who arrive in your website from Google out to a social media page and it happens more often than you can imagine.
Will Social Media benefit your Small Business?
When customers ask us about the value of social media for their small business products or services, our focus is on their popularity and the normal cycle for repeat business from their client base.
If the market is dominated by females, for example cosmetics, social media will be of far more interest to them, compared to most males who hate shopping until they can’t avoid it any longer.
Unless its a ‘boys-toy’ they’ve had their eyes on for some time. Which simply means, women are more likely to stay tuned to your social media updates than men, especially if they are your main target market.
The key aspect is the normal buying cycle for your products or services. If its something most folk only buy a few times during their life, its very unlikely they’ll stay tuned to your social media updates.
If it’s something that’s purchased often by your customers, social media will be of more value to your small business.
